In 2007 New Zealand's Ministry of Education published a synthesis of research evidence on effective professional development (which can be seen here), which was the basis for a particularly impressive professional development programme run by Pakuranga College in Auckland. Below are five principles on which their professional development (PD) programme is based, with a couple of ideas included from other schools I visited.
According to principal Michael Williams, whole staff INSET where an expert addresses everyone is a waste of time. There might be information transfer, but that knowledge will stay in teachers' theoretical framework and not be used in practice. Much more effective is when the CPD is based around your kids in your context.
